From Leh to Kargil, it's a beautiful drive; do take good time to visit the Alchi and Lamayuru Gompas en route. The Zoji La (‘la means pass') between Kargil and Sonmarg opens at 4am for traffic from Kargil. The army allows small car traffic to leave before the trucks and army convoys. It is advisable to be at the Meenamarg check post - 86 km from Kargil - by 4 am. You should leave Kargil latest by 2 am. The pass is shut for repairs on Fridays and no traffic.

Srinagar has traffic like most other Indian cities. The roads to Gulmarg and Pahalgam are quite wide and smooth, and the highways well marked. The locals are helpful people. The army is omnipresent in Kashmir, but not intrusive. If you are stopped and asked questions, cooperate and you won't be bothered. Never jump a roadblock. Always stop if you are signaled to by men in uniform.

Jeep Safari to Da Hanu – Indus Valley

Down the Indus, between Khalatse and the Shayok-Indus confluence, live a people, known as Drok-pa, who are Buddhists by faith, but racially and culturally distinct from the rest of the Ladakhis. Two of the five villages inhabited by them, Da and Biama are now open to foreign tourists. The route follows the Indus River down from Khalatse, past the villages of Domkhar, Skurbuchan and Achinathang, along a fairly good road.

In the Indus gorge, where these villages are situated, the sun's heat is frequently intense; this makes it possible to grow two crops every year in the fields. Fruits such as apricots, apples, walnuts and grapes are grown. Skurbuchan, Domkhar and Achina-thang are attractive villages, with an air of modest prosperity about them. But the special interest of this region is its Drok-pa inhabitants. A minuscule community of perhaps no more than a couple of thousand, their features are pure Indo-Aryan, and they appear to have preserved their racial purity downs the centuries. Their culture and religious practices are more akin to the ancient pre-Buddhist animist religion, known as Bon-chaos, than to Buddhism as practiced in the rest of Laddakh. One curious feature is their abhorrence of the cow or any of its products. They have preserved their ancient traditions and way of life partly through the celebration of the triennial Bono-na festival, a celebration of the harvest, and partly through the songs and hymns.

One of these is a description of an ibex-hunt, for the ibex is especially sacred to them. Another recalls their migration from Gilgit, an event which must have occurred well before it came under the influence of Islam. Their language is said to be akin to that spoken in Gilgit, and by the immigrants from Gilgit settled in Drass.

Nubra Valley: In the days of yore, the fertile Valley of Nubra formed a part of the overland route between Tibet and Turkestan. Once dotted with garlands of camel and yak caravans, this Silk Route glen is also known as the ‘Valley of Flowers’ of Laddakh, and is amongst the greenest valleys in the region, ideal for your holiday break.
The romance of the Silk Route still hangs in the air as you cross the formidable Khardung La (pass) – the highest ‘motorable’ pass on the planet that connects Leh to the Nubra Valley. The road from Leh rises steeply to meet Khardung La and then dramatically plunges into a whirlpool of bends and turns to gradually unfold itself along the rushing Shyok and the Nubra Rivers.
One can understand why anyone would envy this flowering glen. During early summer, Nubra is clad in endless bushes of yellow and pink wild roses, and once the valley is through with the season of roses around August, a carpet of wild lavender lies gently on it.
Nubra is also a relatively warmer valley in Laddakh, and the comparatively benign climate helps yield better crops and fruits, making Nubra the Ldumra or orchard of Laddakh.

This stunning safari starts from Leh “capital of Laddakh”, and continues for nearly 500kms across the high Himalayas to “Valley of Gods” Manali – Kullu, which is in middle Himalaya. This road, used primarily for military purposes, has only been open to foreigners for a couple of years. Since opening we have designed our own tours to offer people maximum enjoyment and many opportunities for photography. From the passes the mountain ranges sweep into the far distance.

The strong sunlight illuminates the yellow and red rocks. The snow capped peaks with a clear blue sky backdrop set beside gorges, canyons and desert, offer a wonderful, pure environment for the Kyang (wild horse), wolf, mountain hare, and rare Himalayan Lynx. Hardy shrubs and brightly colored flowers carpet the plateau areas. Herds of Yak, goat and sheep wander high pastures in search of food accompanied by exotically dressed nomads sporting pigtails, the women folk wearing head-dresses of turquoise, amber, silver, pearls and gold.

We leave the road at some places to try and locate these nomadic herdsmen and their temporary campsites. Travelling across high altitude deserts their encampments can be found up certain side valleys where water and grazing are available. To be invited into their tents for a cup of salt and butter tea or a bowl of yoghurt and dried yak meat is an unforgettable experience

We cross four high passes along the way - Taglang la 17582 feet, Lachalung la 16,616ft.' Baralacha Pass 16,000 ft., 'Rohtang Pass 13,050 ft., and so we must be aware of the altitude and its effects. We pay special attention to comfort and safety providing superior camping facilities and tasty food when we stop in remote places. We use deluxe or comfortable, family run hotels in Leh and Manali. We then spend time in Manali resting, sightseeing and exploring the bazaars and nearby Buddhist monasteries and temples of the valley. The daily driving stages allow plenty of time for sightseeing, photography or stretching the legs. If you feel any concern about health and your ability to stay between 11,000' to 15,000', it is advisable to see your medical adviser.
